This study was conducted with the objective of evaluating the effect of concentrate supplementation, formulated with different ingredients (Mesquite pod meal, sorghum meal or wheat meal and mineral supplementation) on performance, intake and digestibility of nutrients in Santa Inês lambs grazing on urochloa grass during the dry season. Twenty-four uncastrated weaned Santa Inês sheep, with average body weight (BW) 20±2 kg with an average of 120 days of age were used in the assay. The experiment lasted 75 days. The animals grazing deferred Urochloa grass (Urochloa mosambicensis (Hack) Daudy) were distributed into four treatments consisting of mineral supplementation provided ad libitum and concentrated supplements containing mesquite pod meal, sorghum meal... |

In search of new cultivars with differentials that better meet the needs of the cattle ranchers, crosses between five sexual plants and the apomictic accessions PM20, PM21 and Myiage were carried out at Embrapa Beef Cattle, Campo Grande, MS, Brazil. Accessions PM20 and PM21 were used to generate shorter hybrids for use under grazing and for crop-livestock integration; Myiage was used because of its ability to retain seeds. |

Soils under pastures suffer physical modifications, in greater or lesser intensity, via the action of animal trampling. Thus, the aim was to evaluate the spatial dependence of soil physical attributes under bovine trampling. The trial was performed at Roçadinho Farm, Agreste of Pernambuco, Brazil, in a 40 x 40 m paddock that was managed with continuous stocking by bovines and 12 AU ha-1 stocking rate. Soil samples were collected before and after grazing using a 6 x 6 m grid, totaling 36 sampling points. At each point, the bulk density, total porosity, moisture, soil penetration resistance at 0.00 - 0.10, 0.10 - 0.20, and 0.20 - 0.30 m depth were estimated, as was the hydraulic conductivity on the saturated soil surface. Descriptive statistics and... |

Microzooplankton abundance, biomass and composition were investigated in the coastal waters of Asturias (southern Bay of Biscay) in May 1996. Abundance ranged from 0.7 x 10(3) to 8.5 x 10(3) cell.L-1 The protists community was dominated by aloricate ciliates averaging 82 % of microheterotrophs. Small aloricate ciliates, below 20 mu m in size, contributed 63 % to total ciliate abundance. Carbon biomass ranged from 2.4 to 15.4 mgC.m(-3), averaging 23 % of phytoplankton biomass. Aloricate ciliates were also the dominant component of biomass (56.2 %), but the importance of copepod nauplii increased in terms of carbon, averaging 28.5 % of total biomass. Microzooplankton biomass was significantly correlated with Chi a concentration in the water column.... |

Nearly forty percent of mankind depend in one way or another on mountain ecosystems. Local ecosystem services are slope stability, water yield, agricultural products or recreational value. Continental scale influences include drinking water supply, ground water recharging, irrigation water, hydroelectric power, flood control, traffic routes etc. In this paper I review evidence of alpine ecosystem responses to global change. It is emphasized that soil conservation is the centerpiece of any consideration of sustainable land use in alpine terrain. Complete vegetation cover of high biological diversity is essential to protect soils and secure `ecosystem services' in upland systems. It is illustrated that this is not necessarily in conflict with land use and... |

The objective of this work was to evaluate the tiller population density in Urochroa decumbens pasture deferred for 95 and 140 days, aiming to determine the best strategy for nitrogen fertilization. Four fertilization strategies at the beginning and end of summer (0-0, 100-0, 50-50, 0-100 kg ha-1 of N) were studied, respectively, with four repetitions. For the pastures deferred for 95 days, the population densities of vegetative tillers were greater (p < 0.05) for the strategy 0-100. At the end of the deferment period, the weight of the vegetative tillers per hectare was greater for the strategy 0-100, followed by the strategy 50-50. The densities of vegetative tillers, evaluated in the pastures deferred for 140 days, were greater (p < 0.05)... |

An undesirable consequence of grazing activities in eastern Australia is the quantity of sediment emptying into the Great Barrier Reef Lagoon. One of the challenges to reducing sediment loads stems from the lack of private incentives to improve land management practices. There is also a poor understanding of the financial implications resulting from the adoption of sustainable management practices, and, in particular the lack of scientific and economic knowledge linking on-farm management actions to catchment scale impacts. Bio-economic modelling has been used to identify the economic and environmental trade-offs encountered when grazing strategies are altered to reduce off-farm sediment movement from a black spear grass pasture in central Queensland. |
